Why Boarding Concern?
We believe that, in most cases, boarding is not suitable for children under 13 because – in keeping with developmental psychology – children's personality and character are still being formed at around the age of seven and into puberty.
All the childhood years need to be spent with a loving family. When a child reaches adolescence, they begin to seek out the company of their peers. Nevertheless, even as an adolescent, being in an institutional setting with no relief from peers or without privacy is, in our view, not an ideal alternative to a balanced family/peer lifestyle.
Occasionally, there are extreme circumstances that require a child to be institutionalised, but convenience for adults and tradition are no longer valid reasons to send a child away.
Current research shows that while children often survive their boarding school years, problems arising from feelings of abandonment and lack of intimacy or affection during these formative years rear their heads at various stages of adult life.
