Help and advice for ex-boarders
If, having read our website, you feel that the issues raised have struck a chord or remind you of experiences of someone close to you, we recommend the following course of action, based on the experiences of other survivors.
• Read around the issue
Perhaps start with some of the general reading and biographies of others’ experiences. This may help you feel you are not alone.
• Get a hold of Nick Duffell’s book The Making of Them (2000).
Read it, feeling free to relate what it says to your own experiences. It reads very easily and there are revelations on each page for ex-boarders.
• Try to find a counsellor who has special training to deal with Boarding School Survivors
If your counsellor is not familiar with the issues, refer them to this website in the first instance. Work with your counsellor to unearth the issues, break down some of your defences and start to feel more in touch with your emotions.
Support service Boarding Recovery is a growing network of accredited psychotherapists and trained counsellors who specialise in working with adult 'boarding school survivors'.

• Consider joining a boarding school survivor’s workshop
BSS Workshops are held periodically in London. Many ex-boarders have found these workshops affirming and liberating.
• Think about joining us
Through this whole process, you might like to join Boarding Concern and receive our newsletters, which include stories and creative writings from other ex-boarders. We hold conferences from time to time where you can meet others with a similar experience to yourself.
What ever steps you take or emotions you experience, know that you are not alone and Boarding Concern is always available to give referrals and support. We hope that you meet others on your journey to growth and self-awareness. Above all we wish you well.
Please note
Boarding Concern makes information and resources available in good faith to survivors and others but offers no warranties about any goods or services listed on our site.
